Chapter 12
Don
Clio, Michigan
March 20
Donâs legs ached, but other than that, he was feeling good. The gear heâd borrowed from his dad had kept him nice and toasty, with the only exception being his nose. Heâd usually take a face mask whenever he went outsideâthe kind that went above your nose and wrapped around your neckâbut it wasnât in his coat pocket like it usually was. Either heâd forgotten it, or it had fallen out during their trek through the woods.
After their brief encounter with the dogs, they were hot on the trail again, countless paw prints leading the way. Like before, they came across several forks in the path, but they stuck to the main oneâthe one where the majority of the prints led. It had felt like hours, and the landscape looked mostly the same, but only another hour had passed.
They had remained nearly silent while they followed the trail, but a conversation was struck up when they came to a clearing with a few houses nearby. There were only three to four houses, but all of them were large. They had kept the road to the west, and Don knew exactly where they were. They were past Bronnerâs now, to the right, and were approaching the Cass River.
âYou thinking this is it?â Doug asked in a whisper while looking through his scope. He had it aimed toward a gray house directly ahead of them. âPast these fields is the river, and then the inner parts of Frankenmuth.â
âThe riverâs where their food source is, so it wouldnât surprise me if theyâre living alongside it,â Don said. âThe tracks keep going dead ahead toward that gray house youâre looking at, and Iâm betting theyâve stuck to the south side of the river.â
Noah raised his eyebrows. âWhat makes you think that? Thereâs plenty of ways over and around the river.â
âItâs a good natural landmark, and coyotes are territorial,â Don said, shrugging. âThereâs more than one pack out here, so itâs just a guess.â
âItâs a good guess. I wouldnât be all that surprised,â Doug said. He pulled his rifle down and looked toward the sky, using his hand to protect his eyes from the sun. âItâs a few hours past midday already. I donât know how weâve taken so long to get this far, but we did, and the sun will set in a few hours. Hopefully this is our spot, and we can head home.â
âIf it is, getting back here wonât take much time. The roadâs a short walk away, and if we can drive ninety-five percent of the way to their den, it wonât be that difficult to get back out here,â Don said.
Noah nodded. âIt would have been nice to have known that before coming here, but that would have been impossible.â
âLike I said earlierâwhatever scouting thing weâre on should be the hardest part,â Doug said, beginning to walk toward the house. âAfter that, we can drive back and forth in Donâs truck and enjoy the heated seats the whole time.
